POSTAL workers claim relations with management are at an all-time low because of a bitter dispute over working conditions.
Managers have been accused of bullying workers at delivery offices in Benfleet, Wickford and Rayleigh, following clashes over new shift patterns.
It could lead to a fresh wave of strikes, as workers are being balloted over potential industrial action.
But the Royal Mail strongly denies the allegations, claiming it takes a zero tolerance policy to harassment.
The new working conditions mean postal delivery staff are being asked to complete a full working day by taking on extra delivery walks – often an additional four or five streets.
Previously, posties would finish work at the end of their round, regardless if they had completed a full day.
But, postal workers claim they are struggling to complete the extra duties within their normal work hours.
A postman working in south Essex, who did not want to be named, said managers were threatening workers who did not finish their rounds.
He said: “If people don’t complete their rounds, they are getting a formal warning – some have even been threatened with the sack.
“It’s basically bullying. I know for a fact this is going on in Rayleigh, Wickford and Benfleet, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s going on at other places too.”
Keith Elgar, area delivery representative for the Communication Workers Union in Southend, said he was aware of the strained relations.
He said: “We’ve heard of workers being given formal warnings and then threatened with dismissal.
“We are not sure if it is legal. It’s something we are discussing with our lawyers.”
However, the Royal Mail said there is no truth to the allegations.
Spokesman Nick Martens said: “It is completely untrue to suggest any of our staff have been threatened with dismissal because of failure to complete a delivery round.
“Royal Mail takes a zero tolerance approach to bullying and harassment and we have procedures agreed with the CWU which are used when investigating any allegations.”
