MP meets staff and customers after service relocates to high street

ARBROATH’S new Post Office branch was officially opened by Angus MP Mike Weir yesterday.

He met staff and customers as the service opened following a relocation to Haqs Newsagents in the town’s High Street.

Post Office Ltd was forced to find new premises after Lothian, Borders and Angus Co-operative decided not to renew its contract for the Abbeygate Mall branch.

Mr Weir welcomed the appointment of new sub-postmaster Reehan Ul-Haq.

Mr Weir said: “I know how important post office services are to communities like Arbroath, and there were some concerns when the branch had to move.

“I am delighted that a new sub-postmaster has been appointed and wish him every success in his new venture.”

Mr Ul-Haq said the branch will offer the same range of services as before. He said: “Our customers are enjoying a first-class service, and we would like to thank them for all the support they have shown us.”

A spokeswoman for Post Office Ltd said the organisation was confident customers would benefit by the change in the longer term. She said: “I am absolutely delighted that we have been able to safeguard the provision of post office services in the Arbroath area through this relocation. The facilities and service that we provide to our customers is of para-mount importance.”
