Barry posties use pedal power to raise cash

A TEAM of cycling posties from Barry were among those who used pedal power to ride the Taff Trail for charity – and raised more than £2,200 for Barnardo’s.

The "red letter" riders included cycling posties from Barry Delivery Office who got on their bikes – literally – to cycle 55 miles on their day off, to boost the funds of Royal Mail’s chosen charity, Barnardo’s.

Barry postman Alun Robertson said: "I used to do a lot of cycling but I haven’t been out on the bike for a while on a marathon trek like this – although I do cycle at work on my delivery.

"It was well worth the effort though – we were delighted with the amount we raised and thanks go to customers and colleagues in the delivery office who gave so generously to the cause."

Royal Mail manager, Graham Underdown, also from Barry, but who now runs Pontyclun Delivery Office, said: "What started out as a small ride, among staff at the Pontyclun delivery office, grew into a challenge to posties in nearby offices.

"We are grateful to the lads at Barry for turning out and taking part.

"Before we knew it, we had 20 cyclists, who all pedalled furiously to complete the journey from Brecon to Cardiff in an amazing seven hours."

Also among the Barry cyclists were Mari Edwards, Billy Conybeare and "Pinkie" Edwards.

The team were supported along the way by Royal Mail managers, who provided rest bays and refreshments, and two experienced marathon cyclists, Mark Britton, who runs a double glazing firm in Barry, and Andy Williams, who acted as scouts along the route.

The 20 cyclists were recognised at a presentation event at Pontyclun Delivery Office, by Poppy Vine, Corporate Partnership Manager for Barnardo’s Cymru.
