Catalogue of mail not getting through

Controversial working practices implemented in the city’s postal delivery offices are continuing to cause havoc, a Dundee grandfather has claimed (writes April Mitchinson).

Andy Walker (57) continues to experience problems with the delivery of mail to his Coupar Street home, more than two months after the Tele first revealed his plight and the Royal Mail gave assurances problems would “right themselves over time”.

According to Mr Walker, birthday cards, hospital correspondence, housing association letters and essential bills have still not arrived and the problem continues to “play havoc” with his life.

Mr Walker said. “I’m a diabetic and I go to Ninewells Hospital for annual tests. I went up for the tests in early June and I’m still waiting for the letter containing those test results well over a month later.

“Chelsea Football Club said they sent a photograph, which I got for my twin grandsons’ birthday in April, around 17 weeks ago . . . it’s still not here.

“Also, I’ve not had any correspondence to letters I’ve previously sent out — I guess I’m missing at least seven or eight letters that I should have received. Basically, there is a catalogue of mail not getting through and I’m suffering because of it.”

Changes were made to the way mail is sorted at Dundee West delivery office and delivered were introduced back in April. Workers at the office in the Dryburgh industrial estate voted to resist those changes and were later joined in the protest by colleagues at the Dundee East delivery office.

Since then, postal services have been disrupted and sources within the local sorting offices claim a huge backlog of undelivered mail has built up.

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said, “We are not aware of any issues with the non delivery of mail to the Coupar Street area of Dundee. However, I would like to assure our customers that all mail is being delivered.”
