Philip angry as five packages go missing

A resident on a Keighley estate says he is fed up with items of post going missing.

Philip Stovold, of Greystones Drive, Bracken Bank, said he lost five packages in 18 months. The latest of these to disappear was posted on April 1.

Mr Stovold, 62, said the items — most of which were CDs he was mailing to a friend — were not worth a lot of money.

However, he said they did have some sentimental value and added both his and his friend’s time had been wasted by the failures in the system.

He said he complained to Royal Mail after the fifth package failed to arrive at its destination in Spain.

The company responded with a letter stating it could not trace the packages unless a “specific trackable service” was used. It offered six first class stamps as compensation.

Mr Stovold, who is a machine operator, said he had posted all the packages first class to the same address in the Alicante area of Spain.

The packages were either sent from the Keighley central post office or the branch in Bracken Bank.

Mr Stovold said: “I got really cheesed off after the fifth package didn’t get there. It’s annoying.

“I think someone has worked out what the Jiffy bags contain and has been opening them.

“They’re meant to go via Gatwick Airport to a shop in Alicante, which also handles a bit of post. This shop has been able to tell me that the packages never reached Gatwick. So they’re going missing either in Keighley or Bradford.

“They’re not worth much but it’s used up my time and wasted my friend’s time, as they’ve gone back and forth trying to collect things which never arrived.”

He said the compensation offer — made by a Plymouth-based Royal Mail customer service office — was inadequate.

“They’ve not made an effort,” he said. “I think they’ve just thought ‘we’ll send a few stamps and that will keep him quiet for a while’”.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “We are sorry Mr Stovold is unhappy with the service he has received. “Customer services has a record of one complaint in May from Mr Stovold regarding the loss of an item of mail. The item was sent first class and we paid compensation to Mr Stovold of six first class stamps in line with our policy. We would require proof of value of the parcel’s contents in order to consider paying additional compensation up to a maximum of £39 for items posted first class. We always recommend that valuable items are posted using Special Delivery, as this service has basic compensation of up to £500 in the event of loss.”

Reminds me of the guy who once came in to the callers office, when I was allowed to mix with the public, and wanted to know why his Valentine Card hadn't reached his "girlfriend" in Thailand - I know I had to laugh as well, I just should have waited til he'd got out of the office - I asked him what made him think it hadn't reached Thailand and gone missing there - mind you he was a thicko.
