Postal worker union thanks Southport MP

A postal worker’s union has thanked Southport MP John Pugh for speaking out over Royal Mail’s tough disciplinary policies.

Last month (June, 2009) The Champion exclusively reported that postmen in the resort were facing the sack for using bikes without helmets, and the Liberal Democrat said: “I have been shown a frighteningly long list of scores of local postmen who have been disciplined by the Royal Mail for what look like fairly trivial things.

“The only one at risk is the postman himself but it is not even consistent. Behaviour that is tolerated in one area may be the subject of disciplinary action in Southport.”

According to the CWU, Mr Pugh’s claims came as an unprecedented number of postal workers are being disciplined and sacked across the region.

Carl Web, the union’s North West secretary, said: “The CWU would like to thank MPs like John Pugh MP for highlighting our members’ concerns with regard to Royal Mail’s hard line attitude towards them, many who have worked for Royal Mail for over 30 years.

“This is one of the reasons why morale in Royal Mail is so low and industrial relations are non existent. It is also fuelling a lot of fear and resentment among the staff.”

The CWU is calling on MPs and the Government to replace the hard-line directors/managers with individuals that have a public sector ethos and care for the staff they employ.

Mr Web added: “It is a well known fact that employers who treat their staff fairly are rewarded with commitment, loyalty and a workforce who will ‘go the extra mile’. We all know the consequences for employers who choose to rule by fear.”
