Royal Mail urges CWU to call off London strikes

The CWU’s claim to have offered a "moratorium" on industrial action is misleading nonsense. It is nothing more than an attempt, backed by the threat of escalating strike action, to halt the modernisation process which is crucial to the company’s future survival. Any moratorium on further change at Royal Mail - at a time when we urgently need to accelerate the pace of change in the face of an annual 10% decline in UK mail volumes - is simply impossible.

The Government has today made clear that the CWU’s behaviour shows that it is simply not living up to the agreement on Pay and Modernisation its leaders signed in the presence of the TUC in 2007 and has instead chosen to boycott those agreed processes for making change in Royal Mail.

All our customers and stakeholders, including our shareholder, the Government, are encouraging Royal Mail to modernise even more quickly yet the CWU persists in opposing change. The fact is that change must happen now - not after a "moratorium" of several months - when 20% fewer items are being delivered in central London each day compared to two years ago, and efficiency lags behind the rest of the UK, with productivity in some parts of the capital around 35% below the best UK units.

Royal Mail again urges the union to call off the strikes and to rejoin the dialogue to which both the union and Royal Mail signed up as part of the 2007 agreement. Royal Mail wants to discuss how to fully implement the agreement in London, as has already happened in units in the rest of the UK; the union refuses point blank to do so. Customers will not understand how the union can claim to support modernisation but then announce strike action to halt existing efforts to modernise Royal Mail in London.

No its not a moratorium on change its a moratorium on changes that go against previous agreements and without Union involvement

Honour your part of the agreement - Phase 4 and the strikes will probably stop. If London is 35% less efficient why did you pay them bonuses based on your own audits that said everyone had made the targets.

Handy how they ignore all the other strikes going on as well. Again honour your commitments to Phase 4 of the Pay and Mod agreement, and start treating your employees with respect and you would not be facing this level of industrial unrest.

No OPG believes Royal Mail's lies anymore. From :cfo down to line managers, they have lied and lied and lied, and in the process lost any authority or integrity. Not even the bullying, harassment and coercion we get from management has made any difference. They lie, they lose.

Why?

Because this business should (as it used to be) be based on honesty and trust from beginning to end. The customer generally has it with the local postman / woman, the OPG's still work to that ethic in the main (bar the odd crook), Royal Mail management has NO honesty whatsoever and they are 100% untrustworthy.
