Fraudster stole 6,000 euros in Cumbria after posing as travel agency boss

A fraudster stole 6,000 euros from a mail sorting office in Cumbria by posing as the manager of a local travel agency.

Dressed in a pinstripe suit and carrying a briefcase, the man intercepted the money which was destined for the travel agency.

He ordered the euros from the shop on Wednesday and phoned the Wigton sorting office early the next day pretending to be the manager of the shop.

After asking if he could come and sign for the cash, the man went to the office at 7.15am on Thursday and showed identification in the fictitious name of Mark Wright.

He was able to sign for the cash before it could be sent on to the travel agency.

A police spokesman said: “Fraud offences such as this are very unusual for the area and a full investigation is underway to trace the suspect.”

“We appeal for anyone with information to contact us.”

The man was described as 40 to 50, 6ft, with thinning grey hair and was smartly dressed in a charcoal grey pinstripe suit.
