A MAN who took part in violent attempted robbery on a reveller as he walked home from a night out has been jailed for 17 months.

Steven Starr was in a group of thugs who launched a brutal assault on Jonathan Piff who had been out drinking in the town.

But the victim recognised the 21-year-old before he was knocked unconscious after receiving a number of kicks to the head.

Hannah Squire, prosecuting, told Swindon Crown Court Mr Piff said he was ‘quite drunk’ as he made his way home at about 2am on the morning of Sunday, October 12 last year.

She said he had bought some food at a shop and was walking on to Station Road when he was approached by two males.

One of them said ‘Give me your wallet’ and punched him to the left cheek but the victim hit him back and also exchanged blows with the other youth.

He continued on his way home but moments later he noticed that four men, none of whom he thought were either of the first two, were following him.

They caught up with him and attacked him, but he fought back, before managing to run away going to the front door of a house on Station Road.

Mr Piff knocked on the door but before anyone came to his assistance the pursuers, one of whom he recognised as Starr, caught him up.

They then rained punches and kicks on him– and a number of them, including he said Starr though the defendant denies saying it, demanded he give them his wallet.

He continued to try and fight back and managed to bang one of his attacker’s heads on a car before he slipped and was kicked and stamped to the face.

The next thing he recalled was waking in a police car but other witnesses spoke of seeing him being attacked.

One saw the group leaving him on the ground only for one man to return first to land a kick to the head and then a number of other kicks to the ribs and face.

As a result of the attack Mr Piff suffered a broken nose, cheekbone and eye socket as well as a split lip.

Starr, of County Road, pleaded guilty to assault with intent to rob.

Andrew Hobson, defending, said though his client was involved in the incident he was not the main attacker and denied kicking or demanding the wallet.

He said his client was very remorseful for what he had done and told the police in interview ‘I would like to say sorry’.

Mr Hobson said Starr had been homeless but managed to get into private rented accommodation after spending time in hostels.

He also worked sorting post at night at the Royal Mail in Dorcan, he said, and would lose both his job and home if he were jailed.

Passing sentence Judge Mark Horton said: “The poisonous combination of drink and the rage of young men let you to join with others in what was plainly a cowardly and savage attack on another young man who, because he was drinking and walking home, was ill equipped to deal with this assault by you and the group.

I realise that RM no longer employ agency staff (or, so I've been told), so are we to now believe that RM no longer vet people wanting to work for them, and will just employ any old riff-raff?
