COUNCILLORS have discussed the pros and cons of Todmorden switching to a Halifax postcode due to uncertainty over the future of postal services in the Oldham postcode area.
Todmorden town council wrote to Royal Mail setting out its concerns after news that Oldham Mail Centre, which is the regional distribution point, will close and processing of OL-postcoded mail will be transferred to Manchester Mail Centre sparked fears for the future of Todmorden delivery office, on Rise Lane.
Members received what they felt was an unsatisfactory response and have written back to Royal Mail under the Freedom of Information Act asking to know the future plans for the sorting office and deliveries in Todmorden.
During last week's general purposes committee meeting, Coun Hilary Myers told members that a public meeting held in March to discuss the future of the delivery office heard that it was not commercially viable but Royal Mail has not been able to find a viable alternative.
Coun Myers said: "Any alternative would have to be within the Oldham postcode but the Oldham office is closing, it can't move to Bacup and there is no room at Rochdale due to the large sorting machine.
"Could they provide us with evidence that the Todmorden office is not commercially viable?"
Councillors talked about whether changing to a Halifax postcode would be beneficial if the postal service in Todmorden was negatively affected by the reorganisation in the OL postcode area.
Coun Myers said: "I have been told that the OL postcode is the reason why our insurance premiums are so high and I think we would be doing the town a favour if we could get a Halifax postcode.
"We also get Manchester phone directories because we are under the OL postcode. It's not much use if you want to do business in Calderdale."
Coun Cheryl Stovin said: "It would make changes. Insurance premiums would go down.
"I tried to pick up a car from Enterprise in Halifax but had to go to Stretford in Manchester."
Coun Rob Goldthorpe felt that some things would be better with a different postcode but others would be worse.
Earlier this year, nearly 800 people signed a petition to save Todmorden delivery office. It was presented to Calderdale Council by Coun Olwen Jennings (Lib Dem, Todmorden).
Royal Mail has said it has no plans to close Todmorden delivery office and any changes it may make to its operation will be aimed at ensuring its customers in the Todmorden area continue to receive the same high quality of service.

Re: Should Todmorden swap OL for HX
Ever since postcodes were introduced around forty years ago towns have forever been changing between different delivery offices and mail centres but surely never have they actually changed postcode areas in which case these councillors hardly know what they're talking about in suggesting Todmorden addesses change from an OL to a Halifax postcode.TrueBlueTerrier wrote:http://www.todmordennews.co.uk/news/Sho ... 5226685.jp

Also it's wrong of them to blame Royal Mail if insurance companies happen to set premiums according to a residents postcode area.

Don't blame Royal Mail who introduced postcodes solely to assist the sorting and delivery of mail.tuppy785 wrote:todmorden should change to halifax postcode we are in west yorkshire and not lancashire i recently moved back to tod from blackpool and all my insurances have doubled just because we have an ol postcode
Blame the insurance companies whose fail to invest in a proper system of assesing risk and instead just use postcodes which were never designed for and are totally inappropriate for such a purpose.
