Wortley: Fury over mail hoard

An investigation is under way after a stash of undelivered mail was found at a postal delivery office in Wortley.
Royal Mail bosses confirmed a probe had started following the discovery at the Tong Road depot.

They said no members of staff had been suspended "at this stage" – but declined to reveal any further details about the case.

That refusal to come clean about the full scale of the problems at Tong Road drew criticism today from worried local residents.

After being contacted by the Yorkshire Evening Post, mail chiefs refused to say:

* How much post had gone undelivered;
* Anything about claims that an inspection team had found the items in a locked boiler room;
* If efforts were being made to belatedly get the mail to its intended recipients.

Joy Chapman, a 63-year-old Armley resident who has had repeated delivery delays since the end of last year, told the YEP: "We have a right to know what's going on.

"Our mail is our property, after all. If it is being withheld from us at this office for some reason, then I want to know why."

"I've been told about one person who was sent some flowers that had died by the time they arrived. Someone else was still waiting for their passport on the day they were due to go on holiday."

A spokeswoman for Royal Mail said: "An investigation is under way after a quantity of undelivered mail was discovered at Tong Road delivery office in Leeds.

"No one has been suspended at this stage and I am afraid it would be inappropriate to comment further because of the ongoing investigation."

She said anyone with concerns should contact Royal Mail customer services on 08457 740740.

The office at Tong Road handles deliveries to LS12 area, which includes Armley, New Farnley and Wortley.

Royal Mail paid out nearly £1m to disgruntled customers in Yorkshire in 2007, up 30 per cent on the year before.
