TWO Peterborough postmen have won a first class award for helping a former postie in need.

Mark Smith (43) and Steve Hurry (39), from Peterborough, who in separate incidents came to the rescue of a pensioner who had suffered falls on two consecutive days, have jointly won the Eastern Region Community title in Royal Mail's annual 1st Class People Awards

Dennis Little (88), who had been a Peterborough postman for 30 years, suffers from Parkinson's disease, is paralysed on one side of his body and frequently suffers falls.

His wife, Annie, twice called on the help of postmen as she felt she could trust postmen.

The pair received a joint prize of £500 at a presentation in London.

From regional finalists, a national winner is chosen in each category, and they receive £1,000 each and a glass trophy.

There is one overall winner of "Postman of the Year", who wins £3,000 for a holiday.
