AN ONLINE petition has been set up to try and save jobs at a Royal Mail sorting office.

The office in Leek Road, Stoke, is under threat over plans to move work to Wolverhampton.

About 100 employees have been told all but 14 of their jobs are being axed or transferred.

Union leaders say they will fight the proposals and workers are prepared to strike.

The petition has been set up by Ruth Selwood, of Waterhayes, whose husband works at the sorting office. It has so far attracted 54 signatures. Mrs Selwood said: "We want to get the people of Stoke-on-Trent behind us."

"The quality of mail service we're getting at the moment is awful. If we transfer more jobs to Wolverhampton it is only going to get worse."

The Royal Mail said it wanted to avoid compulsory redundancies.
