A WELL known postman will deliver his last letter on Saturday after 17 years.

Allan Tyrer, aged 64, is Bury’s longest-serving postman having pounded the streets of Unsworth since 1992.

Through his delivery work, the father-of-three has made hundreds of friends who will be sorry to see him go. Indeed, in 2006, more than 250 residents signed a petition to keep Allan delivering to their homes after Royal Mail considered a shake-up of routes.

One of them was Norma Bedford, of Harris Drive, Sunny Bank.

She and husband, Stuart have two golden labradors who won’t let Allan leave until he has given them a biscuit.

Norma said: “It’s quite funny that the same thing happens every day. It is one of the many things we will miss about Allan.

“He always comes with a smile and never misses a delivery.”

Allan, of Cobden Street, Halliwell, enjoyed a previous spell with Royal Mail in Bolton for three-and-a- half years in the 1970s.

He said: “I have loved every moment of my work in Bury. There are people aged in their 20s now who I see on my round who I remember as primary school children.

“I will miss the exercise and the good-natured chat with the people on the rounds.”

During his earlier Royal Mail stint in the 1970s, one of his duties was to dress as Postman Pat and speak to primary school children about writing letters.

Allan’s boss, delivery manager Steve Hardman, said: “Allan is very well-liked at Bury delivery office and has been a great work colleague.

“He’ll be sorely missed by everyone and we wish him all the best for the future.”
