Ex-Honda worker has secured a job after a six-month wait

A DAD who spent six months down in the dumps after being made redundant has finally found another job.

Darren Tucker, of St Andrew’s Ridge, has been out of work since October when he was made redundant from a body-shop after leaving Honda months earlier.

He was forced to take up benefits for the first time in his life and even had to go to family members cap in hand to keep his head above water.

But, after appearing on the front page of the Adver to highlight the massive rise in Swindon’s unemployed – which passed 5,000 last month – he has now landed a job sorting mail at the Royal Mail’s Dorcan offices.

Since then he says he feels like a million dollars.

“It feels good bringing home the bacon again,” said the 35-year-old.

“It was tough going there for a while but it just goes to show you how long it actually takes to get a job – six months in my case.

“But people should take heart from the fact that I got one in the end.

“It took a while before I finally saw the light at the end of the tunnel but now that I have, my days of unemployment just seems like a bad dream.

“It is grim out there, I feel bad for everyone who hasn’t got a job.

“All I can say is that people have to try and keep positive because I know how depressing it can be, especially when bills pile up and no application replies are forthcoming.

“I think the Royal Mail have taken 50 people on, it’s only part-time but there is plenty of overtime and I hope to land a full-time job in the future.

“I can’t tell you how good it feels to wake up in the morning and know I have a workplace to go to.”

Darren says his tips to beat the blues during unemployment include spending time decorating, spending time with the children and getting plenty of fresh air.

And Darren said he wanted to thank his friends and family for helping him out during the tough times.
