LONDON, April 8 (Reuters) - British parcel and postal delivery group Business Post could benefit from opportunities arising out of plans to restructure state-owned Royal Mail, CEO Gus Buswell told Reuters on Wednesday.
Britain is looking to sell a 30 percent stake in the business under controversial part-privatisation plans which business minister Peter Mandelson says are necessary to keep the postal operator commercially viable.
Deutsche Post's DHL unit and TNT of the Netherlands are expected to submit bids later this month, according to a source familiar with the matter.
"That would obviously leave questions about their own competing businesses to us. I don't believe that competition law would allow them to continue which means that one or the other would probably be divested which is good for us," said Buswell.
Analysts say a deal between TNT and Royal Mail would be the best outcome for Business Post's UK Mail division as the Dutch operator has the most overlap with it.
"If it was TNT, they'd have to sell TNT Post which is the main direct competitor to UK Mail. They'd benefit a lot more if it was TNT," said Ben Thefaur of Arden Partners.
"Short term uncertainty about whether TNT will be running it or not must be helpful in the market for Business Post in terms of winning new contracts," he added.
Plans to part-privatise the post office were drawn up following recommendations made in a government-commissioned study of the Royal Mail by Richard Hooper, formerly deputy chairman of media watchdog Ofcom.
Business Post's Buswell welcomed the report's findings: "I think the Hooper report was a tick in the box for competition and also killed the rumours that it's competition's fault that the Royal Mail is in the state it's in. It's nothing to do with competition. The issue is their own inefficiencies."
Earlier, Business Post said it expected full year underlying pretax profit to be ahead of market expectations as it benefited from picking up market share. (Editing by Jon Loades-Carter)
