A ROYAL Mail employee has been sacked after intentionally delaying the post in Notts.

The worker from the Beeston Delivery Office was dismissed last month and missing mail was found and returned to customers.

Last week, the Evening Post featured the story of Rex Wyatt, 62, from Toton, whose post was delivered almost five years late, with a letter of apology from Royal Mail.

Among the late items was a cheque for £200, which is now invalid as so much time has passed.

In a statement given to the Evening Post this morning, a Royal Mail spokesman said: "An employee from Beeston Delivery Office was dismissed in March for the intentional delay of a quantity of mail.

"The delayed mail was recovered and has now been delivered to customers with a covering letter explaining the delay and telling them who to contact should they require further information.

"We apologise to any customer whose mail has been affected by this incident.

"Royal Mail has a zero tolerance approach to any dishonesty and that stance is shared by the overwhelming majority of postmen and women, who are honest and hardworking and who do all they can to protect the mail and deliver it safely.

"We will always seek to prosecute the tiny minority of people who abuse their position of trust."
