A brave postman defied two would-be thieves who tried to steal parcels from his delivery van outside Cheltenham Town Hall.

The unknown hero confronted the crooks after they broke into the van and attempted to make off with several packages.

Although all of the parcels were recovered because of the postman's courageous actions, the two men escaped down a side passage leading from Imperial Square.

Inspector Tony Rymer, of Gloucestershire Police, said officers were alerted to the attempted theft shortly after 9.20am.

He said: "The postman had left his van securely. He was delivering a parcel when the two men managed to break into the van and tried to take a number of packages.

"All the parcels were recovered but the men made good their escape."

Anybody with information regarding the incident should call 0845 090 1234, quoting incident number 177 of Saturday, April 4.

Are you the heroic postman? If you are or you know his identity, call the Echo newsdesk on 01242 271821.

Sadly the 'no thanks' remark is not without foundation. The current head honcho of RM Cheltenham thinks more of his own bloated bonus incentives than staff morale; as a staff member you're more likely to be disciplined for something as trivial as talking to a colleague or stopping to drink a cup of coffee. Our office has reached it's nadir in recent months and shows little sign of recovery. Nonetheless we get on with the job despite the petty idiocy of overpaid inept upper-tier management.

Well done to him but I bet he wont get any thanks from Royal Mail. This could have been a postman delivering our post in his private car
