Postal man gets stamp of approval

A long-serving Royal Mail worker who helped pull three students to safety after a car crash on the motorway has been awarded for his bravery.

Father-of-three Swinder Dhillon, from the Walsall delivery office, was driving along the M40 Southbound close to Junction 13 last October at 9am when the car in front suffered a double tyre blow out and spun out of control. He pulled over and went to the aid of the three women who were trapped in their overturned Vauxhall Corsa.

The vehicle was in danger of bursting into flames at any moment.

Mr Dhillon, who has worked in the town for more than 30 years, said: “I was travelling to London with my wife and one of my daughters when the car in front just lost control and spun 360 degrees and rolled over three times.

“Fortunately it landed on the hard shoulder and it was early so there was not so much traffic around, the 58-year-old said.

“I pulled over and could see there were three girls in the car and they were just speechless,” added Mr Dhillon who is based at the delivery office in Darwall Street.

He said: “The doors were locked and would not open from the inside or outside and I was thinking about smashing the window when one of the girls managed to open her window.

“I pulled them out one by one and they went to sit in my car with my wife and daughter until the ambulance arrived moments later,” he added.

Thanks to his swift actions, the young women suffered only minor injuries and shock.

Once back at work Mr Dhillon happened to mention his ordeal to a colleague who told bosses, and he was one of four Midland postmen invited to London on Monday for the Royal Mail’s First Class People Awards.

Mr Dhillon was presented with £500 and given a certificate by Christine Bleakley from BBC’s The One Show.

“When I was first told I had been nominated I said I didn’t want any fuss or anything, but they insisted.

“It was very nice event and my wife and I were put up in a hotel on Sunday evening,” said Mr Dhillon.
