Residents' surprise for retiring postman

POPULAR Postie Ray Smith delivered his last letters this week after 23 years of working in Tamworth.

Ray (64) has been a postman in the Two Gates and Kettlebrook areas since 1985.

Residents paid tribute to him and organised a special surprise party on his last day.

Debbie Blizard, of Highcliffe Avenue, said: "He's wonderful and has been more than a postman to us.

"He's been a postman here since I was a teenager and he's just been so helpful.

"He's been like a social worker, a friend, and a family member as well.

"We all miss him already."

Ray said he was delighted by their response.

"It was really emotional, I was not expecting it at all," he said.

"They gave me quite a lot of presents.

"I always enjoyed doing my job.

"I'll miss everyone and I thank each and every one of my customers."

Ray said he wished to thank Mrs Blizard, Mrs Rathbone, Mrs Jones and Mrs Marlow.

He first started working for Royal Mail in 1983, and it was in 1985 when he started his first round in Kettlebrook.

One of the best things about being a postman, he says, is that it has kept him fit and healthy.

Never having had a van, Ray has walked an average of eight miles every day.

Now he's retired Ray said he plans to take a holiday and decorate his home.
