Thieving postman jailed for 12 months

A WORCESTER postman has admitted stealing the contents of parcels he was supposed to deliver.

Thomas Holloway now faces 12 months in prison for the offences, which took place at the Worcester mail centre between August and November last year.

In total he was caught opening nine parcels, stealing a computer game and a search of his home uncovered £700 of electrical items stolen from parcels including six iPods, three further computer games, three Nintendo DS consoles, two DVDs and a CD.

Richard Wilks, prosecuting on behalf of Royal Mail, said: “Other members of staff were suspicious and reported the matter to the investigating officers.

“He was watched by them and when the surveillance was carried out he was seen to open nine packets which he was not entitled to do.

“He was also seen to place an item away from where it should have been.”

Mr Wilks said that when Holloway was interviewed he denied doing anything wrong, but allowed investigating officers to search his clothing, car and home.

Holloway, who had worked for Royal Mail for three-and-a-half years, later handed in his resignation.

The 24-year-old of Wood Terrace, Worcester, admitted two charges of theft and one of opening postal packets when he appeared at the city’s Magistrates Court.

Barry Newton, defending, said Holloway had no previous convictions and no issues with alcohol, drugs or gambling.

“There are a lot of good things I can say about him,” said Mr Newton.

He requested the case be adjourned for a pre-sentence report to be prepared by the probation service.

Deputy district judge David Miller said: “I think that the courts rightly take a more serious view of the theft of mail rather than the theft from an employer because public confidence with Royal Mail is a significant factor.

“I am considering an immediate custodial sentence to the maximum of this court’s powers but I am not going to impose that sentence today.

“This is a very serious offence I am looking at 12 months in total.”

Holloway was granted bail and he will appear back before the court on Tuesday for sentence.

Not another thieving slimeball who has tarnished the good name of the business we work for, and through his opportunistic actions damaged the hard earned reputation of his work colleagues. 12 months suggested I'd give him 12 years - lock him up

Funnily enough the other day I was handed an A4 printed sheet by a customer whilst out on delivery. Here are the contents.


The Postal Worker noticed the unsealed envelope addressed simply "To God". No address just "To God".
The contents spilled out so he glanced and read.

Dear God,
I am an 83 year old widow, living on a very small pension. Yesterday someone stole my purse. It had £100 in it, which was all the money I had until my next pension payment. Next week is Christmas, and I had invited two of my friends over for dinner. Without that money I have nothing to buy food with, have no family to turn to, and you are my only hope. Can you help me, please hear my prayer.

The Postal Worker was touched with great compassion. He showed and read Edna's letter to all the other workers during a WTLL Team Briefing. With great sorrow and compassion in abundence in their hearts, each and every one of them dug deeply into their wallets or purses for whatever amount they could spare from their meagre wages. A whip round was had by all and sundry and a respectable amount of money was accrued.

With their DOM's permission the Postal Worker and colleagues had collected and raised somewhere in the region of £96, which he put into an envelope and sent back thankfully to the woman's return address. The rest of the day all the workers felt a warm glow thinking of Edna and the dinner she would be able to share with her friends.

Christmas came and went. A few days letter another unsealed letter came from the same old lady "To God". All the workers gathered around while the contents of the letter was read.

It read:

Dear God,
How can I ever thank you for what you did for me? I now truly believe in God and in miracles. Because of your gift of love I was able to fix a glorious dinner for my friends. We had a very nice day and I told them of your most wonderful gift. By the way, I noticed there was £4-00 missing. I think it might have been those bas***ds at the local Royal Mail delivery office.

I know TBT gets these newspaper reports from Google reports on Royal Mail stories.
But how come Google doesn't seem to report the articles that support RM workers,
like the two from the Camden New Journal I've posted today?
Is it another anti-postie conspiracy or just lazy researching?
