Bravery award is almost in the bag for Kelso postwoman who tackled armed raider

KELSO postwoman Angela Lyall has been shortlisted for Royal Mail's most prestigious award in recognition of her bravery.
Mrs Lyall, who works in the Kelso delivery office, is one of two on the final shortlist in the bravery category for the Royal Mail’s 1st Class People Awards 2009.

The 48-year-old was nominated for the award after she confronted an armed man who was attempting to rob a Post Office.

She was sorting mail at Yetholm Post Office in September 2008 when an armed man entered the branch.

With no thought for her own safety, Angela and subpostmistress Sheila Jeffrey tackled the man. Both suffered minor injuries during the struggle and a court case is pending. Angela will receive £100 in prize money for being shortlisted and has the chance to win the overall Scottish Bravery title, which will be announced in early March.

Angela said: “I am absolutely delighted to have been nominated for this award.

“I just did what anybody else would have done in those circumstances.”

Royal Mail Group director of Scottish affairs, Ian McKay, said: “I’m really pleased to congratulate Angela on being shortlisted for this award.

“Her actions demonstrate exactly why our postmen and women are such highly valued members of their local communities.”

The 1st Class People Awards recognise acts of bravery, generosity and selflessness of postmen and women and customers were invited to nominate Royal Mail people they thought were the unsung heroes of the local community.

That's not bravery it's stupidity, anyone who wants to fight an armed robber should join the police otherwise they should follow the police intructions of 'give them what they want and get them out of the store as soon as possible'.

No amount of money can replace someone killed in a robbery (anyone still remember the guy shot dead in his fathers PO).

Have to agree with you there brother especially when in Royal Mail's own Streetwise Presentation they say the following:


As a business Royal Mail places your personal safety as a premium and advise you not to place your life in danger or at risk when threatened with an act of violence or attempted theft.


So what does this mean? Basically, that if you are ever in a situation whereby you are threatened or confronted by persons, do not offer resistance, do not get into a fight situation, hand over you mails if threatened, get away from the area and report the incident immediately to the Police.
