A BENLLECH pensioner has paid warm tribute to the postman who saved her life and revealed "I could hug him every time I see him".

Madge Davies, 78, was aided by hero postie Gwyn Owen, 63, from Llangefni, who has since been nominated as a Welsh finalist in Royal Mail's First Class Awards 2009.

In response to the fire alarm going off Madge's house while out on delivery, he used a spare key to let himself in and helped Mrs Davies out of the building before dealing with the fire.

She said: "I can't remember much about what happened, as it was all a complete shock.

"He was marvellous and I am sure he saved my life.

"I could hug him every time I see him."
Mrs Davies, who hails from Lancashire but has lived in Benllech for more than 40 years, added: "I had left the hob on and it was catching fire, but after helping me out, Gwyn saw to it all.

"I believe if it had been for any longer it would have gone up."

Her niece Elizabeth Taylor joined Mrs Davies in thanking Gwyn; she said: "We're so grateful to him as he got here just in the nick of time.

"We really want to stress our gratitude to Gwyn, as well as the
neighbours and everybody else who helped."

Gwyn said: "I could see two pans boiling away on the stove in the kitchen and the curtains had caught light, but there was no sign of Madge.

"I spotted her wandering round in a confused state, so I led her out of the house – a few more minutes and the whole place would have been alight."

From almost 100 entries from Royal Mail customers and managers throughout Wales, judges chose Gwyn as one of nine shortlisted postmen and women who go the extra mile" in the communities where they live and work.

Mrs Taylor added: "He's our favourite postman!

"If it wasn't for him, I don't think Madge would be here."
