Corsham residents - 'this needs sorting out

CONCERNS over the state of the postal service in Corsham are to be raised at a meeting in the town next month.

Town councillor Ruth Hopkinson, who lives in Bences Lane, said her recent problems with receiving her post had led her to write to residents in the area asking them if they had similar feelings.

She said the postal service had deteriorated since the sorting office moved to Bumpers Farm in Chippenham and although she did not doubt the hard work of the postal staff she felt the problem lay with a lack of local knowledge.

The 20 members of staff from the Stokes Road sorting office in Corsham joined 106 of their colleagues from Chippenham in a new building on The Wessex Business Centre on Bumpers Farm last September.

Cllr Hopkinson said: “I sent out an email to people on my mailing list asking them if they had any problems with the service and I got many responses.

“Some of them said people had paid for redirection services but this was not being adhered too.

“Others said they were worried for elderly neighbours and one said they now got their post delivered between 1.30pm and 2.30pm instead of in the morning.”

Cllr Hopkinson has suffered similar problems with post being left on her back door in the rain and parcels not being delivered.

She said:“I think most of the problem is they have lost any local knowledge, I’m sure the ladies and gentlemen that deliver the post do it to their best ability, but they do not know the area.”

The concerned councillor is going to present her findings and raise the issue at the next Corsham Town Council meeting on March 9.

Corsham Town Council chairman, Allan Bosley, said the council had always been against the move of the sorting office to Chippenham.

He said: “It was always going to be impossible for people without access to cars to retrieve undelivered mail, not to mention the fact that it is inefficient and encourages unnecessary journeys.

“We are aware informally, from the Post Office staff, that the move to Bumpers Farm has been extremely unpopular and on a personal note I can vouch for the fact that mail is now generally delivered later, by a good couple of hours.”

A spokesman for Royal Mail said: “We are concerned to learn that some customers are experiencing problems with the delivery of their mail in Corsham.

“We would encourage anyone who is having such problems to contact our Customer Services Helpline on 08457 740 740 so that we can look into and rectify the matter.”

In a couple of years they'll be remembering 1.30/2.30 as the golden age whenever they ge their post once a week.

I wonder what happened to the 20 or so who formerly delivered there - you don't think it's some sort of X File - you know they say they've moved to Chippenham but really they've been abduucted by aliens
