Suspect package disrupts Hatfield

WELWYN HATFIELD MP Grant Shapps has praised police after a suspicious package was delivered to his constituency office yesterday.

Unusual writing on the outside of the small package raised the concerns of workers in the MP’s office in The Common, Hatfield.

“With these sorts of things it’s best to err on the side of caution,” said office administrator Sandra Benjamin, “People send all sorts of things to MPs’ offices. If you’re in the public eye you’re likely to get post from people with an axe to grind. This package looked very weird and it wasn’t clear what was inside.”

The road and neighbouring offices including Royal Mail’s sorting office were cordoned off by while the package was examined for about an an hour and intelligence checks were conducted.

Mr Shapps said: "I’d particularly like to thank PC Perks and PS Smith for their incredibly fast response and the professionalism of their team. Also thanks to my team in my constituency office who dealt with the suspect package exactly as they should. In addition, my apologies go to anyone in neighbouring offices whose work was disrupted because of this.

"Unfortunately you can’t plan for people who want to cause such disturbances."
