The Royal Mail’s director of corporate responsibility, Steven Boorman, has been appointed to lead a review into the health and well-being of the NHS workforce.

The joint review, by the Department of Health and the NHS, forms part of the government’s response to last year’s report by Dame Carol Black on the health of the UK’s working population, which recognised the correlation between high-quality care and effective workplaces.

The review will include a call for evidence from employers, staff and other stakeholders and a look at current best practice. Early findings are expected in the spring.

Boorman, who is also chief medical adviser to Royal Mail Group and was a past president of the Royal Society of Medicine’s section of occupational medicine, said: “This is a great opportunity to build on the good work already done and to help it maintain and improve the health of its diverse workforce. My experience in Royal Mail Group has helped me to understand how vital it is to care for the health and well-being of people to help them to achieve the high expectations of the public service they provide."

Dame Carol also welcomed the review. “My recent report 'Working for a healthier tomorrow' showed that there are clear bottom-line benefits to business from investing in health and well-being programmes, and this is equally true for public sector organisations who need to demonstrate value for money for the tax payer," she said.
