A Dundee postie has been suspended by Royal Mail after allegations that he allowed a member of the public to use his spare uniform and carry out his rounds (writes Alan Wilson).
The claims are being urgently investigated by Royal Mail, who say they will take “appropriate” disciplinary action if they are found to be true.

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said, “Royal Mail can confirm a postman from Dundee Central Delivery Office has been suspended while an urgent investigation is carried out into an alleged incident at the Tayport Delivery Office, and appropriate disciplinary action will be taken.

“The safety and security of mail is of the utmost importance to this business.

“Royal Mail will take whatever action is necessary to ensure the security of the mail is not compromised in any way.”

The allegations were made to the Tele by an appalled Dundee postman, who said he was disgusted when he heard of the events which had led to the suspension.

The postman said, “Apparently our colleague gave the other guy his uniform and he went to Tayport and prepped the mail in the office before going out and delivering it.

“Supposedly nobody queried him and I don’t know how it was found out, but the postman was suspended quite quickly after it happened.

“We’re all disgusted about this. It’s brought the integrity of Royal Mail into question. We’re told to approach any strangers we see and ask who they are and what they are doing in our offices.

“There have been a lot of changes though. The duties have all changed and I think maybe somebody was off the boil. I don’t know why he was doing it — probably just to help his mate out.”

A spokesman for Tayside Police said the matter has not been reported to them, but pointed out that Royal Mail can take their own legal action against staff in what can be deemed criminal matters.

It turns out they knew he was a fake when he prepped his delivery in less than the usual time and completed his walk without cutting-off.
