POSTAL workers across Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire could go on strike again over a long-running dispute.

Union representatives from the ST postcode area met yesterday to discuss the possibility of more industrial action over the suspension of 12 employees at Royal Mail's Burslem delivery office.

The workers were suspended in September 2007 over allegations of bullying and harassment, sparking an unofficial walkout by colleagues at Burslem and then weeks of strikes.

Seven of the group are now back at work – Jason Cornwall was the latest to return on Monday – but five are still going through an internal appeals process after they were sacked.

Now union representatives from across the region say they are considering industrial action over their treatment.

Communication Workers Union (CWU) members met yesterday at Burslem Working Men's Club to discuss the situation.

Dave Ward, deputy general secretary of the CWU, said: "The reason I've come up here is to show that the national union is 100 per cent behind the campaign.

"Since this started, 12 people have endured unbelievable suffering over something that, in our view, could have been resolved by talking the issues through. We're here to show our support for Burslem and ensure that justice is done.

" I believe we will win that fight and if it means we have to look at industrial action, then we will consider it.

"We've been talking about broadening out the campaign to the whole of the Midlands Number Seven branch, which covers the ST postcode."

Mr Ward said the five remaining workers are receiving financial support from the union. Representatives believe they have new evidence to support their reinstatement, which they are planning to present to Royal Mail bosses before internal appeals take place.

And he added that he hopes the situation can be resolved without the need for further industrial action.

He said: "We don't want to get to that position – we want Royal Mail to see sense."

Dave Condliffe, Midlands regional project worker at the CWU, added: "It beggars belief that we still haven't got through the internal appeals process yet."

A spokesman for Royal Mail said: "All cases are being handled in accordance with our conduct procedures, which are agreed with the CWU.

"The threat of disruption helps nobody."

I'm slightly curious. Surely the internal appeals should have been done and dusted by now given that they should be completed in line with the 3 month deadline for claiming unfair dismissal?

Jason Cornwall has picked up 16 months pay for twiddling his thumbs at home. Any decent company would have taken disclinary action against the managers involved for the huge amount of waste. Similar to an incident last year at Stoke MDEC. One of the night keyers ended up being paid 7 months for an obviously b***s**t B&H complaint against them - better known as "mc******gate". Royal Mail managers seriously waste alot of money over cack complaints, hence the Hooper report. Only problem is ordinary posties are going to carry the can. There needs to be an all out manager audit NOW!!!

the orders are not to undermine local managers - there was a time when RM botched B&H complaints and laid things on too thick and simply blamed it's junior floor supervisors but not any more as RM middle & senior managers need to be fed with what they wish to hear to justify their sorry existence , however it begs the question - who is trying to impress whom and who is giving the orders - usually it's Senior Managers in :lfo's glass tower high up in the sky .

RM just hope these people will be good boys and go away , otherwise RM would be forced to admit they'd a serious problem . The process is corrupt , a spokesperson parrots out " it is agreed with the CWU " , after frequent Tribunal visits with monotonous regularity , but it's certainly not within the spirit of the agreement .

Siege Mentality and Skinhead management is the order of the day , it is ironic with all this push for a culture change and corporatism , that no other company would carry these idiots in charge & empire builders of the worse kind .

It's like the worst sort of corporation , a management system that exists for the benefit of the managers in it and spends most of it's time running itself . Unless there's changes in this rotten organization from the very top downwards , it will never improve and there will be more perverse " moral " crusades .

Willful misrepresentation , malicious prosecution and unfair detriment for illegitimate trade union activity are serious offences but on Planet RM the end justifies the means .

The very first thing big allan :lfo leighton did was his masterpiece of strategy of banishing union representation with his we do not tolerate bullying in this workplace speech which those who worked at the time of his appointment would remember. It is this that drove the our hand's are tied approach by our union as everything the union did was interpreted as bulling the management throughout the organisation!. But also drove the management to implement the order's from upon high as they the lower management did have a union too, it is with this in mind that we should take note of what the new chairman does and Say's and his action's in practice!.
