A POSTMAN rescued an abandoned baby otter from the side of a road.

Kenny Wilson spotted the pup lying motionless in the slush.

He stopped his car and popped it in his mailbag to keep it warm, then bought kitten milk and fed it through a ballpoint pen tube.

Kenny, 50, of Tweedbank, near Galashiels, continued on his journey to take part in a 220-mile Mini enthusiasts' tour.

Then the postie made a very special delivery to a Borders animal rescue centre.

Yesterday, six-week-old Orla was doing well at the Arthurshiel depot near St Boswells.

But manager Shona Middlemas has been hit with a £15-a-day fish bill to keep her fed.

Kenny noticed the otter pup as he was travelling on the A7 near Stow on Sunday morning. He said: "She was frozen and I did not give her much of a chance.

"It looked as if she had either been abandoned or her mother had been hit by a car.

"She looked terrified from the noise of the cars and would soon have been hit.

"I popped her into a mailbag and carried on up the A7.

"I just kept hearing little squeaks and sucking noises so I stopped at Tesco at Dalkeith and bought some kitten milk.

"She seemed happy enough and kept crawling up my neck looking for more warmth.

"Everyone at the car rally was amazed. Orla seemed to enjoy her trip round the Trossachs and when we got home we fed her some crushed chicken."

Shona said: "Kenny did a good job because it sounds as if she would not have survived."
