Burton MP denies betraying Royal Mail by using its rival

AN MP has denied allegations that she betrayed Royal Mail – instead claiming she uses the service every day.

Janet Dean, Labour MP for Burton, was accused of using a private company to send out Christmas cards rather than the national service.

She was accused of the actions along with her prospective replacement, Labour parliamentary candidate Ruth Smeeth.

The claims were made by Conservative parliamentary candidate Andrew Griffiths.

He alleged that Mrs Dean and Mrs Smeeth sent Christmas cards and surveys to people in Burton and Uttoxeter using the Dutch delivery company TNT.

Mr Griffiths said: "I don't know why she would choose to betray the Royal Mail at a time when it is struggling to survive.

"Just last month Gordon Brown said he wanted to privatise Royal Mail but it looks like Mrs Dean has already decided to abandon it altogether."

But Mrs Dean said: "I am strongly committed to the future viability and sustainability of both the Royal Mail and the Post Office network.

"Both my constituency and parliamentary offices use Royal Mail services on a daily basis.

"Both Ruth and I used the Royal Mail for the distribution of our personal Christmas cards which numbered in excess of 1,000."

Ruth Smeeth also denied the allegations.

She said: "I'm disgusted that the Conservative Party are attacking both Janet and I for seeking to engage directly with the residents of Burton and Uttoxeter."
