Talks aim to safeguard 600 postal jobs

UNION officials will hold further talks over the future of postal jobs in Crewe.

South Cheshire branch secretary for the Communications Workers Union (CWU), Steve Wright, is to meet national CWU officials to discuss the next move in the fight to keep 600 jobs at the Weston Road site, which Royal Mail wants to transfer to Warrington.

Strike action planned before Christmas by postal workers in Crewe in protest against the move was called after last-ditch talks.

Mr Wright said he is hoping to find out what the next move is for Crewe at a CWU national meeting on Thursday, January 15.

He added: “Everyone knows the strike was called off because some progress was made but to this day we don’t know what that means and if the progress was for the good of Crewe workers.

“We agreed to pull out of the strike in good faith but if Royal Mail doesn’t keep to its word and come to the table and enter into fresh talks we will pick up our fight again.

“I am hoping that something comes out of next week’s meeting. What we want is for Royal Mail to scrap its North West review and start again because there are obviously a lot of flaws in it.”

Crewe and Nantwich MP Edward Timpson has also scheduled an update meeting with the South Cheshire branch of the CWU on Friday, January 16.
