Firms urge Royal Mail to get message across

ROYAL Mail bosses are being urged to improve a major delivery – the message over the closure of Coventry’s sorting office.

The Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce has offered its support to the proposed move – claiming the company needs to modernise – but has called for bosses to improve their own communications.

Executives from Royal Mail explained the reasons behind the closure of the Bishop Street office and the creation of a new multi-million pound replacement processing centre in Northampton, when they met with business leaders from the Coventry branch of the Chamber.

The £71million project will also include the creation of two new delivery offices in Coventry and all work will be completed by 2010.

The plans have sparked a call for industrial action from the mail unions but Royal Mail has promised that, while around 350 jobs will disappear, there will be no compulsory redundancies.

Amrik Bhabra, chair of the Coventry branch, said the session had eased the concerns of business but said the Royal Mail needed to improve its communications.

He said: “Of course, there are always issues and concerns when a big company or organisation undergoes massive change and we fully understand that this reorganisation will not be easy for anyone employed by Royal Mail.

“But from a commercial point of view it is understandable why the company needs to modernise and wants to move to a single floor, state-of-the-art complex.

“In a perfect world we would like that to be in the city, but that is not our decision and we hope that the two new centres in the south and north of the city will maintain and improve the service to businesses.

“I think it is fair to say that, before the presentation, we were far more fearful of the impact the changes would make than we were after we had heard the reasons for the decision and what it will mean for this area. It is vital that the Royal Mail ensures that more people and interested groups hear its side of the story and the reasons behind the changes.

“Certainly I don’t think that message has got across to people and the Royal Mail’s job would be so much easier it had.

“We will be asking members to monitor the quality of services before and after the changes and have promised to keep Royal Mail informed of our findings.”

You could say the same about both the CWU and Royal Mail and their employees and members. It verges on the ridiculous when 2 major players within the communications field cant seem to communicate very well.

I don't think it's a case of 2 major players not being able to communicate but more like they DON'T want to communicate.

Sad but true, the CWU don't talk and RM don't listen.
