Tributes paid after death of Postie who was a rugby ace

TRIBUTES have been paid to a young Cwmavon rugby player who died after being struck down with a mystery illness.

Matthew Mizen (pictured), who also worked as a postman, died at Singleton Hospital in the early hours of Sunday.

The 25-year-old, from Heol Crwys, regularly featured on the wing for Cwmavon RFC.

Yesterday, club officials and team mates gathered to remember their friend. Cwmavon rugby club secretary Gareth Edwards said: "It's an incredibly difficult time, we are all so shocked, it has hit everyone badly.

"Matthew had come through the ranks with us, he was an extremely jovial character and as he worked as a postman everyone in the community knew him.

"His brothers and all his team mates got together at the clubhouse yesterday. They were looking at pictures of him on their phones and telling each other stories about him."

A Royal Mail spokesman said Matthew's death had hit staff hard.

"It is with great sadness that staff at Port Talbot delivery office learned of the death of Matthew at the weekend," he said.

"Matthew was a postman for eight-and-a-half years, delivering most of that time to his home town of Cwmavon.

"He was a popular and well liked member of staff and will be sorely missed at the office by his colleagues.

"Our deepest sympathy goes to his family at this sad time."

Matthew was admitted to Neath Port Talbot Hospital over Christmas, before being moved to Singleton.

It is believed Mr Mizen's family are still unclear as to what caused his death.

mathew was a lovely person who i spoke to every morning always had smile we always had a good laugh i wil miss him thoughts go out to his family who i know very well . always in our thoughts the best postman the royal mail had.xx
