Postal thefts in Welwyn Garden City

THIEVES stole letters and other mail from postmen on in Welwyn Garden City on two occasions in the run-up to Christmas, police have just revealed.

The first incident occurred in Goblins Green at around 8.30am on December 6, when over 60 letters were stolen from a postal bag on a bicycle.

The items were recovered, badly burnt and weather damaged, the next day.

Two days later, at about 10.05am in Bedwell Close, postintended for homes in Pondcroft, was taken by two teenagers who escaped down an alleyway.

Police Constable Tony Hiles said: “These incidents would have caused much inconvenience for people living in Welwyn Garden City and I am appealing to anyone who saw the theft or knows anything about it, to please come forward."

Police were unable to publicise the thefts earlier as they were interviewing a suspect, since released without charge.

And of course it was the postman's fault for leaving it unattended on a bicycle.
