Royal Mail worker stole parcels 'to sell on eBay'

HUNDREDS of parcels have been stolen from Coventry and Warwickshire’s biggest postal depot.

A major investigation is underway at Bishop Street sorting office in Coventry after DVDs, lap tops, toys and games consoles went missing.

It is alleged many of the items were later sold on an internet auction site.

Some of the packages were Christmas and birthday presents.

Royal Mail suspended a member of staff on December 4 on suspicion of theft pending an internal investigation.

The worker, who lives in Coventry, resigned a week later, a Royal Mail spokeswoman said.

She added: “Our investigations are continuing.

"Royal Mail has a zero tolerance approach to any dishonesty and that stance is shared by the overwhelming majority of postmen and women, who are honest and hardworking and who do all they can to protect the mail and deliver it safely.

“We will always seek to prosecute the tiny minority of people who abuse their position of trust.”

It is alleged a private eBay account was used to sell more than 500 items during a six-month period.

Another postman, who asked to remain anonymous, told the Coventry Telegraph: “It was presents, all sorts: toys, games, DVDs.

"If you looked at what was for sale you’d think it was a shop.

"We are annoyed that this has been going on. We can’t believe it.

“What will happen to all the people who won’t get their presents, and to all the people who have bought this stuff?”

The Royal Mail spokesman said the organisation had the power to bring its own prosecutions.
