Scrapping 2nd Class Post...

Post by fmrPOSTIE »

Why doesn't Royal Mail scrap the 2nd class post and stream everything 1st class, by axeing 2C surely RM would gain extra revenue from the price differential between 1C and 2C?

Just have one continous flow of first class, i dont see a need for 2C in this day in age?

Is this viable? What are your thoughts.

Cheers.

The trouble is first class is third class at best compared too ten year's ago and nearly twice the price!. The real problem is DSA mail from other operators who don't contribute the full cost's of the service we provide even if it is third class compared to ten year's ago!. We need to charge the full cost's too all the privateer's if they think they can do a better job let them try the door is and has been open but none will dare open it for it suits them as they know a good deal when they see it!. Royal mail pays the price for the competition every time we deliver their mail!.

I agree that DSA regulated pricing should be set by Royal Mail, i have no idea whether this was part of the Hooper Report? And yes your right, none of the private couriers will, or can, physically provide an End-End service. On QofS if you read RMs own figures that would paint a different picture re:1C?

Depends upon what time you receive the mail and perceived by the public and as we deal day to day they say it was better service 10 to 15 year's ago some say it was better in the thirty's and forty's i cannot argue for i don't know but i bet they had the staffing levels better than today!.

Just imagine how the public would complain at having to pay 36p instead of 27p for a letter that doesn't need to be delivered for a few says.

Scrapping 2nd Class Post...

I think they should change 2nd class post so that it is delivered 'within' two days and not on the second day.

All that 2nd class mail posted on Monday sits and waits to make Wednesday even busier when we often don't have enough to deliver on a Tuesday.

To secure the Universal Service Obligation in times of tough competition, over the next ten years we shall most likely see, first, Saturday deliveries scrapped, second, Second Class stamped mail scrapped such that domestic customers pay at least 40p to send letters, and third, all of us made self employed with a franchise for each walk such that Royal Mail is no longer responsible for sick pay, holiday pay, pensions, etc.

Only if we allow it, anyway the minimum I'd work for self employed is £1,000 per week.

If not franchised then I can see delivery posties being paid on a "piece rate" basis something like 3 to 5p per C5 letter 5p to 7p for each flat 10p for each magazine etc, and all packets and prios being done by parcel force. This will be supported by using "stay at home parents", students, job seekers and 6 or 8 hour deliveries for any Posties left over from this current period.

Piece rate :hmmmm if they want that then I'll just FO, I don't mind the 6+hour deliveries (if it's ready prepped) but at my age (and experience) I can't be bothered with being self employed again or a pay cut for piece rate.

Could see us being paid per item within the next couple of years, especially if TNT or the like use their expertise. Think on it from Royal Mails side. They can have a skeleton staff on the books paying them prob part time hours to save on holiday pay etc, to cover sickness and possibly holiday options.

The rest will be offered an area possibly for free at first. I disagree about the amounts they will offer I think it will be nearer 50% of postage value ( remember they won't be able to force this on us so they will have to make it attractive for us to want to take that kind of option). I also think they will expect all parcels to be done for that area and the door to doors increased significantly.
They will prob offer us leased vehicles at subsidised rates.
Need proof Parcelforce already do this in some areas. If they can reduce the headcount by say 50% - 60% think of the savings they will make, not to mention the self employed folk won't get sick psy, holiday pay and Royal Mail won't have to pay any National Insurance contributions or pension contributions. Once they get it implimented they will gradually reduce the rate per item due to " distribution costs etc " . The current revisions won't work and they will have to do something far more drastic and I think pay per item self employed route would be the only option left, unless they sack every postie and re employ them at minimum wage, or sorry forgot thats what TNT does in Holland. ( please note I don't think they sacked thier posties but I do believe they pay minimum wage)
