Gun terror at post office

MASKED raiders burst into a post office brandishing a gun during a terrifying robbery.
Two men stormed into the North Road post office in Front Street, Wingate, where one of them threatened the postmaster with the gun.

The robbers got away with cash and fled in a small white van and headed in the direction of the Fir Tree pub in the village.

There was a sign in the post office window this morning saying: "Due to armed robbery we are closed. We will be open as soon as possible."

Police are appealing for witnesses to the terrifying attack to come forward and say any information will be treated in the strictest confidence.

A Durham Police spokesman said: "At about 5.18pm on Monday, December 8, two masked men entered the post office in Front Street, Wingate.

"One of the men was carrying a firearm which was used to threaten the postmaster.

"The suspects stole a quantity of cash before leaving the scene in a small white van heading in the direction of the Fir Tree public house in Wingate.

"Police are appealing for any witnesses who may have been in or around the area of the post office at the time of the incident or may have seen the white van.

"Any information will be treated in the strictest of confidence."
