AN exam marker has slammed Royal Mail after exam scripts she was due to receive didn’t arrive.

Vivien Walsh was expecting to get the Open University papers last month, and although the Royal Mail tried to deliver them when she was out, she says its system for arranging redelivery has not worked.

Vivien, from Sandhurst Road, Didsbury, has gone through the online process to select a date for delivery, but the parcel didn’t turn up. She also tried phoning the number on the Special Delivery cards several times, only to be met with an answer message that doesn’t allow the caller to arrange redelivery.

And despite having a broken arm, making it difficult to carry bulky parcels, she has twice been to the Royal Mail delivery office, on Granville Road, Fallowfield, but didn’t have the time to wait the 50 minutes that others ahead of her in the queue had been waiting.

Vivien, 62, a retired lecturer in innovation management from Manchester University’s Business School, is now an external marker for the Open University.

She said: "They’re absolutely useless. Why do they have phone and email systems to arrange redelivery if they don’t work?

"I went to the delivery office twice even though I didn’t know if I would be able to carry the parcel because of my arm, but because the queues were so long, I couldn’t wait any longer.

"It’s very annoying and I feel like my time has been wasted. Some people can get to the delivery office to pick up parcels and some people can’t."

Vivien was due to mark ten exam papers from the Open University as an external, secondary marker. The papers on working with the environment for a sustainable future, had already been marked by the university’s internal markers, but Vivien’s marking was part of the moderation process to ensure consistent standardised results.

If she had received the scripts, she was also due to take part in the university’s exam board meeting on Wednesday, November 26, where all markers and course tutors confer and formally agree results.

But as she was not able to mark the papers, the university has had to grade the students’ work without the extra level in the moderation process.

Mary Stewart, the course manager for the Open University, said: "It’s extremely irritating for us because having the papers marked externally is part of the process of checking we have the correct results and confirming marks."

A spokesperson for the Royal Mail said: "We apologise that the customer has not received the level of service which she expects from Royal Mail and a manager is contacting her to arrange delivery of her parcel at a time which is convenient.

"An investigation is underway into the issues she has raised."

I've got a solution for her, whenever the postie comes to the door, she could always ask him/her if she could have the parcel re-delivered the next day and providing that she asks nicely and hasn't spent her entire time making the posties life a misery, they would rearrange delivery

I know that I've had people ask me to redeliver items and those who where nice about it would get it and those who shouted/grumped/threatened me didn't.

I missed that

Someone needs to tell her that we're using new innovation management ( :lfo :cfo ) and that she is no longer a customer, just someone who happens to receive the service

I wish we had the same type of modernisation, I could do with someone doing my job 2 weeks after I've already done it

I find the recorded message on the telephon eline rather funny.
I had to phone it to get through to the callers office at 5am and it still said "We are currently experienceing high call volumes ...". That would be high call volumes of a grand total of one then.

That's typical of the incompetency of RM, can't get through, can't get it redelivered,standing in que at callers office for ages, etc; no wonder the public are pissed off.

This is a brief description of Innovation Management:
