Pushchair girl’s miracle escape

A YOUNG girl escaped with her life after her pushchair was clipped by a car in York city centre.

The Yorkshire Ambulance Service said the car went over the girl, but the wheels missed her.

However, she was left with facial and shoulder injuries, which were not thought to be life-threatening.

The child’s mother, who was pushing the buggy, suffered bruising. A spokesman for York Police later said the girl suffered a broken collar bone.

The accident, which happened outside the Royal Mail sorting office in Leeman Road, caused traffic chaos during the city’s rush hour last night as commuters were forced to find a different way home.

Vehicles were also prevented from getting to the sorting office.

Police said the accident involved a girl and a green Ford Fiesta.

Traffic Constable Andy Morton, who is heading the investigation, said: “We were alerted to the incident at about 3pm. We shut Leeman Road whilst investigations are carried out.”

He added that the road closure would mean traffic chaos for rush-hour motorists. He said: “I imagine there will be lengthy traffic delays, whilst investigations are carried out.”

A Royal Mail employee, who was unloading a vehicle in Leeman Road, said it was thought the driver of the Ford Fiesta was trying to turn around when the accident happened.

The girl, who police said was aged about three or four years old, was taken to York Hospital by ambulance.

A police spokeswoman said that from initial reports it appeared the Ford Fiesta had mounted the pavement but she stressed this was still to be confirmed.

Three police vehicles and an unmarked police car cordoned off the area, while three police officers and five police community support officers carried out inquiries.

The road was not reopened until about 7pm last night leading to increased congestion in other parts of the city.

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said vehicles were prevented from getting to the postal sorting office, and this had affected collections slightly but would not affect this morning’s mail.
