Strike threat lifted

LIVERPOOL postal workers have suspended a strike ballot after bosses agreed to re-open talks on the fate of the city’s sorting centre.

A vote was due to start last night among Communication Workers’ Union (CWU) members over Royal Mail’s plan to close five north west sorting centres, including Liverpool’s Copperas Hill site and the possible loss of 600 sorting jobs.

Royal Mail wants to switch Liverpool’s sorting duties to Warrington in 2010, leaving it as the only major UK city without a sorting centre.

Unions, MPs and regeneration agency Liverpool Vision had submitted a report to Royal Mail suggesting three possible sites for a new sorting centre, which was turned down.

Their mood was further deepened after a report being prepared on the future of Royal Mail suggested a further 20,000 postal jobs could be cut.

But Liverpool CWU branch secretary Mark Walsh met his national executive in London yesterday and learned that new talks at national level over the sorting centres have been agreed.

He said: “As a mark of good faith we have delayed the ballot for industrial action.”

Mr Walsh also revealed that Liverpool Riverside Labour MP Louise Ellman will write to new Business Secretary Lord Mandelson putting forward Liverpool’s case for its own purpose-built sorting centre.

Royal Mail declined to comment.
