EDITOR - News that the Royal Mail has doubled its profits over the last six months whilst over 1,500 post offices are to be shut down will incense your readers.
Royal Mail's round of closures was based on economic viability, highlighting the hypocrisy of this £177 million profit.
The Countryside Alliance has campaigned hard for the thousands of threatened branches.
A lack of economic viability should never have been the main reason for closures; Post Offices form the hearts of their communities and many isolated and elderly people will be stranded without them.
Royal Mail should perhaps consider that Post Offices are about people, not profits.

Easily said but to run a network the size of which the public wants cost money, the network dosent run for free! Id suggets the complaint is with the government who chose to knock 40 milion a year funding off post offices. :mfo

Are people really expecting profits from Royal Mail letters and parcleforce to be handed over to the counters network? The other parts of RMG need money as well not just counters!

My home town has a population of just over 10,000. For longer than I have been on this planet there has been two PO's here. Both were extremely busy places with people using the services. Now we have one. Have all the customers from the shut PO went to the other? NO! Some have, of course, but where are the others? How does closing down PO's and forcing people away from using them a viable plan for the future?
The ship has sunk but how far will it fall?

What he doesn't say is that those of living in urban areas are subsidising the deliveries of those living in rural areas.
He talks of 'economic viabily' but would probably object all the more if letters to urban areas cost 20p but letters delivered out to rural areas cost the true 40p.
