More than 50 MPs have raised concerns over ongoing Royal Mail delays affecting residents including people across Birmingham.
Tahir Ali, MP for Birmingham Hall Green and Moseley, joined cross-party calls during discussions with Ofcom and the Communication Workers Union (CWU) to demand action on persistent delivery failures.
Mr Ali said: "Royal Mail delays are one of the issues I hear about most from constituents, and I’m not prepared to let it drop.
"A big thank you to CWU CEO Dave Ward for joining us and speaking up so passionately on behalf of postal workers and our local communities to press for real action on delivery failures".
Ofcom has since pledged to address the issue directly with Royal Mail’s CEO, investigate the complaints process, and consider sharing more detailed delivery data with MPs.
Mr Ali said: "Ofcom has now committed to tell Royal Mail’s CEO directly that the responses MPs’ offices are receiving are unacceptable, which they have done".
It will also review specific complaints from constituents who were dissatisfied with how their cases were handled.
Royal Mail says they hits targets in Birmingham
Alistair Cochrane, Royal Mail’s CEO, has agreed to meet with MPs to discuss the ongoing problems.
MPs are also pressing to meet with the Minister for the Future of work, Kate Dearden.
A Royal Mail spokesperson responded that they were hitting target for Birmingham.
They said: "Our latest independent data shows a significant improvement across the Birmingham postcode area, with 90.2% of First Class letters delivered the next working day, up from 67.7%.
"We know how important it is that customers receive their mail when expected and we take concerns about delays seriously."
Mail continues to be delivered across Birmingham daily, though Royal Mail acknowledged that individual routes can be affected by short-term local issues.
The spokesperson added that teams are working to deliver any outstanding mail as quickly as possible across Birmingham every day.
