MP demands Royal Mail action in Bexleyheath and Crayford

In an age of emails, apps and text messages, it is easy to underestimate the importance of a letter arriving on time.

For many residents across the Bexleyheath and Crayford constituency, delayed post has become a regular occurrence, with serious consequences including missed hospital appointments and earlier this year, delayed postal votes in our council elections.

Over the past year, I have been contacted by many residents frustrated by the poor standard of Royal Mail services in our area.

While four different sorting offices serve my constituency, a particularly high number of complaints come from the DA6, DA7 and DA16 postcodes, all served by the Bexleyheath delivery office.

Residents tell me they can go days without receiving any post, only to then receive a backlog so large it barely fits through the letterbox.

Others have said they have had to travel to the Bexleyheath delivery office to collect mail that has failed to arrive.

Concerns have been raised that parcels are prioritised over letters and staffing shortages are making matters worse.

I've heard from people whose birthday cards arrived late and whose important documents, including driving licences, Blue Badges and Oyster cards, have been delayed or failed to arrive.

These are not minor inconveniences.

They are failures that have a real impact on people's lives.

This is not the universal postal service we were promised when the Conservative and Liberal Democrat Government privatised the service.

Both my father and grandfather were postmen and I absolutely recognise the concerns being raised by postal workers themselves.

I've heard directly from staff about problems and am grateful to our local CWU branch for making me aware of these concerns.

They understand the challenges faced and often have practical solutions for a better service, yet many feel their experience and expertise are being overlooked.

These workers take pride in serving their communities and want a system that works for both customers and staff.

All of this comes at a time when postal costs continue to rise.

Residents rightly expect a reliable service in return.

Royal Mail's Universal Service Obligation exists to ensure affordable postal services reach every address in the country under the principle of 'one price goes anywhere'.

Yet Royal Mail is repeatedly failing to meet both the spirit and the requirements of that obligation.

I understand the argument that the reforms to the Universal Service Obligation may help Royal Mail adapt to changing patterns of communication and improve performance.

However, any changes must not become an excuse for declining standards or poorer service for local communities.

I have raised concerns with Ofcom and the Minister for Small Business and Economic Transformation.

However, my greatest concern is Royal Mail's apparent unwillingness to acknowledge the scale of the problems being experienced locally.

It remains the case that I am yet to receive a reply to my letters to them of December 2025, February 2026 and May 2026 asking specific questions about their deliveries in our area and the Universal Service Obligation.

I am grateful that they met me in the summer to outline service improvements they are proposing to make locally, which along with residents, I shall continue to monitor.

While there are clear national challenges, residents of Bexleyheath and Crayford have highlighted serious local issues that require urgent attention.

I will continue to raise concerns in Parliament, with Ministers, the regulator and with Royal Mail themselves, in order to deliver a more reliable service.
