Time off for Part Time staff
I have just become a delivery rep and am on a mission to ensure that the part timers in my office are treated exactly the same as full time staff. That includes part timers having a long weekend every 6th week the same as full time staff. I know employment law states that Part time staff should not be treated less favourably than full time staff, but is there anything written on the subject that is a bit more specific? I want to be able to be able to slap a document on my DOM's desk that he cant ignore. I am sure I heard something during a union meeting a few years ago, but cant find anything on the subject.

How about the law of the land:
Statutory Instrument 2000 No. 1551
The Part-time Workers (Prevention of Less Favourable Treatment) Regulations 2000 http://www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si2000/20001551.htm#5
Statutory Instrument 2000 No. 1551
The Part-time Workers (Prevention of Less Favourable Treatment) Regulations 2000 http://www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si2000/20001551.htm#5
Also this web page from the Government says the same but in a more readable way http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Employment/ ... G_100277385. - (1) A part-time worker has the right not to be treated by his employer less favourably than the employer treats a comparable full-time worker -
(a) as regards the terms of his contract; or
(b) by being subjected to any other detriment by any act, or deliberate failure to act, of his employer.
(2) The right conferred by paragraph (1) applies only if -
(a) the treatment is on the ground that the worker is a part-time worker, and
(b) the treatment is not justified on objective grounds.
(3) In determining whether a part-time worker has been treated less favourably than a comparable full-time worker the pro rata principle shall be applied unless it is inappropriate.
(4) A part-time worker paid at a lower rate for overtime worked by him in a period than a comparable full-time worker is or would be paid for overtime worked by him in the same period shall not, for that reason, be regarded as treated less favourably than the comparable full-time worker where, or to the extent that, the total number of hours worked by the part-time worker in the period, including overtime, does not exceed the number of hours the comparable full-time worker is required to work in the period, disregarding absences from work and overtime.

Good luck being a rep,it's hard work but most of the time worth it.
Teebs once again has it spot on,also you should have weekly resource meetings with your DOM to work out the following 2 weeks resources.
Although we have no part timers at our place what we do with the reserves is we keep an aggregate of their time off and we try to get them their long weekends when ever possible.
It's very hard to get them the same as the regulars but we try our best and it's usually ok.
For instance even though the senior reserve is up for a specific duty, sometimes they are knocked back as the less senior have not had a long weekend in a while, stuff like that.
Not sure if this would help with the part timers, but it could be a start.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Make sure everyone have a long weekend every 6 weeks
ie Week 1
Name - M - T - W - T - F - S
Person A - LW - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 -1
Person B - 2 - DO - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2
Person C - 3 - 3 - D0 - 3 - 3 - 3
Person D - 4 - 4 - 4 - DO - 4 - 4
Person E - 5 - 5 - 5 - 5 - DO - 5
Person F - 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - LW
Then Move F to A, A to B and so on. then rotate it every week. This is one way of making sure it work fairly.

At my office it only happens if you you cover a duty for two weeks and that postman's long w/e falls within that two weeks or your a p/t with your own duty. If you are thrown around the office week to week you never ever get a long w/e off, maybe a saturday once in a blue moon.

I am not a new Rep, I am also a Processing Rep (for the past 9 Years) and a H&S Rep. I took on the role of Delivery Rep because nobody else would do and they were getting screwed over. A lot of my free time is spent dealing with issues. I still work nights and I stop on in the mornings to deal with delivery issues, and I intend to ensure that all my members are treated fairly and equally regardless of whether they are full time or Part time, no matter what job they are performing.disgruntledpostie1 wrote:I'm a FT reserve and I never get long weekends (the other reserves get them sometimes but I never do).

I've not had a long weekend since February. My days off always seem to be Tuesdays, i'd love a long weekend now and again. Maybe by the end of the year?
The day is gonna come when we’re all gonna have to testify.

I don't understand why you have not had a long weekend. I take it your Rep is involved with resource meetings? If everyone else is getting them, put a grievance in and force the issue.HTPostman wrote:I've not had a long weekend since February. Talking about P/T staff, I was talking to a bloke who told me that he had a someone in his office who was on a 30 hour contract, but over six day's, so he is a five hour day, but never gets a rest day, the office hasn't got a rep and it was brought in by the back door, I always thought that the way forward agreement said that all jobs should be at least 5 day wks, anyone else heard about this in any other offices? it could be that the bloke is mistaken, but if it's happening elsewhere then that would confirm it
