Couriers speak out over working for Yodel in Ipswich depot

At the Ipswich depot of Yodel, situated in Ransomes Industrial Estate, several couriers have come forward to share troubling experiences regarding their treatment by the company. Concerns raised include health and safety issues, excessive fines, and puzzling deductions from their paychecks.

In interviews conducted with couriers preferring to remain anonymous, one worker noted, “There are so many issues, some that are really disturbing and would shock you.” These sentiments reflect a growing dissatisfaction among the workforce, who argue that operational practices compromise their safety and well-being.

Among the serious allegations, couriers report that delivery cages are frequently overfilled, leading to hazardous maneuvering on forklifts—a situation that amplifies risks in an already demanding job environment. Additionally, they claim that vehicles for deliveries are often used without valid insurance or current MOT certifications, which raises significant legal and safety concerns.

One courier described his distress after receiving a £450 fine from Yodel for canceling shifts to care for his son during a medical emergency. The company justified the fine by claiming it covered the cost of hiring a replacement courier. Such penalties have left many workers feeling disillusioned, with one stating, “It’s making us not want to work here anymore, and I think it’s their plan to get rid of us and replace us with people willing to work for next to nothing.”

The dissatisfaction is echoed by Steve Garelick, the London Regional Officer for the GMB union, who highlighted the harsh conditions under which couriers are operating. He voiced deep concern regarding Yodel’s practices, particularly the imposition of steep fines for what couriers deem unfair reasons. Garelick emphasized that couriers already face considerable risks in a job characterized by isolation and exposure to potential verbal or physical assaults, coupled with the additional stress of being publicly blamed for issues related to parcel handling on social media platforms.

The GMB union is advocating for greater protection for precarious workers, ensuring that they receive the same safeguards as traditional employees. Garelick condemned the bullying and harassment reported by union members, calling for accountability from Yodel amidst these serious allegations.

Yodel has been approached for comment regarding these troubling claims but has yet to respond publicly.
