ARCHWAY is a "Bermuda Triangle" for lost letters, according to infuriated residents who say thousands of items have been wrongly delivered for years.
People living in the N19 area say mail intended for someone else is mistakenly sent to them with frightening regularity. And it makes them wonder how many of their vital letters are disappearing into a black hole.
Tom Forde, who lives in Cressida Road and is a member of the Shakespeare Residents' Association, says he first raised the problem 10 years ago.
He said: "I get mail on a regular basis for other addresses in the N19 area - it has been going on for years and years. My neighbours all get the wrong mail too and the worry is where is all our mail going?"
He added: "I think it is down to inexperienced staff. I spoke to my postman and he said sorry. But the very next day the same postman delivered a letter that was not for me.
"Once I saw a postman delivering letters with a mobile phone wedged under his ear. That's an example of how careless they are."
Mayor of Islington Councillor Stefan Kasprzyk, who lives in Archway, has also noticed the problem.
Speaking in his role as ward councillor, he said: "It should not be happening. It has been going on for a long time and I feel it is getting worse. It is more irksome than a matter of life and death, but it should not be going on."
Councillor Kasprzyk suspects part of the problem may be that so many roads in the area begin with 'St John's'.
He added: "In Archway there is a St John's Way, a St John's Road, and a St John's Villas. There is also St John Street in the south of the borough and occasionally their mail comes here as well."
Councillor Ursula Woolley, another Archway resident, said: "We get a lot of mail for someone living in Barnet which is a bit random!"
A Royal Mail Spokesman said: "We are sorry to hear that these customers are unhappy with the service.
"We take complaints about delivery of the mail extremely seriously. We urge anyone with concerns to contact us on 08457 740 740 so we can resolve the situation.
