HUNDREDS of postal workers were expected to deliver an angry message to the Labour conference when they marched on Manchester today to protest against post office closures.
Members of the Communication Workers Union were gathering at Castlefield before marching through the city to demonstrate their fury at 'drastic changes' in the postal industry.
They were expected to be joined by pensioners and community activists concerned about the closure of Post Office branches in towns and villages across the region.
Billy Hayes, the union's general secretary, said: "There are huge changes taking place in the mail industry, which are damaging jobs and services. Royal Mail's plans to close large numbers of mail centres and ongoing post office closures will cause thousands of job losses across the country.
"This will undoubtedly have an effect on the quality of mail services."
The M.E.N. revealed in June that the Post Office was planning to shut 67 of the 380 post offices in Greater Manchester and neighbouring parts of Cheshire and Derbyshire.
Last month it emerged that only four of those earmarked for closure had been saved despite protests by tens of thousands of people, while two more branches were added to the 'hit list'.
