Colleague kicked off round

Post by macetheace »

Question for anyone to answer please......we had an office, which closed down roughly 3 yrs ago and the staff were transfered into our office....a few left, thus leaving rounds for anybody to cover.....a work colleague was put on a particular round and has been doing it for the last 2 1/2 yrs ...only to be told now that the round has to be advertised.....I could understand this if it was say 6 months into working on the round but not 2 1/2 yrs....yes it's managers fault....but where does he stand in the current circumstance....cheers

They'll have to stick their name in the hat like anyone else who is interested in that duty. If they are the most senior outta all the candidates then they should get it. They don't have squatters rights to the duty 🤣🤟✌️

He has got an argument to stay on the round due to continuity.
Two and a half years is a long time and seems unfair, it probably got to the stage where he was planning things around his rest days e.t.c.
Tell him to challenge it based on that.

He didn’t pick it through it being open to anyone to pick so it isn’t his pick, it was always temporary.

So managers can just pick and choose who is on what they and leave them on it and it trumps seniority?

If it’s advertised and he has the seniority to get it br will, if he doesn’t then he shouldn’t so don’t see the issue

He has done well to be on a fixed duty as a reserve for so long
If you tolerate this, then your paid break will be next

Resourcing obviously hasn't been done fairly for a while in the office.
Supposed to be done weekly with union and management.
For whatever reason the reserves haven't kicked off it about it previously.
Continuity is an argument I have seen won before though.
There must be a reason it hasn't been challenged before.
Must be a rubbish walk or he is first reserve.

Been through this exact scenario twice. In the first instance because vacant duty signings failed to be held for two whole years and in the second because I was on holiday when the signing eventually happened (again, after two years). Very very annoying, but basically the context surrounding the pick was irrelevant to the picking.

I'm definitely over it and didn't mention it last week to the guy that signed for 'my' duty fifteen years ago.
The machine stops.

This is the reality of what has been happening in 50+ duty DOs across the country for many years. Favouritism and laziness by management across the board.

Our office full of managers pets on duties they didn't sign for and are never advertised. Surprise surprise the union rep not interested.

I think the only way any USO reform is ever going to work in our office is if there is a full revision and re-pick. It is pointless advertising duties when the walks are all over the place and are unequal.

Most of the duties in our office are paired walks and it is largely expected that they will be doing 2 or 3 days worth of mail. Without a complete reset what you will end up with are posties only ever working their days off if it's on their own round whilst someone else who is playing by the rules is still expected to pick up 2 or 3 days worth of mail everyday. Managers wanting "bums on seats" to get all the walks covered is completely at odds with the business as a whole which is trying to save money by not getting them covered!
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

Rep needs to pull their finger out.

Have been told by the union rep the USO reform triggers a resign.

Absolutely hope so, same issues at our place with people sitting on duties that weren't advertised, nice duties given to part time new starters (nothing against new starters don't get me wrong but seniority ignored which is wrong) when the full timers on them retired etc
