A DISGRUNTLED Royal Mail customer has been cleared of racially assaulting a postman who had failed to put his mail all the way through his letterbox.

Danny Barlow, aged 32, of Claremont Court, Halliwell, was found not guilty on all counts after becoming involved in a dispute over the delivery of his post.

Bolton Magistrates heard that postman Dilawer Patel was doing his rounds on May 21 when he entered the Claremont Court flats in Halliwell.

Mr Patel said he put his mail into Barlow’s letter box, but as he was walking upstairs Barlow came out in his underwear and called him over.

The postman said that Barlow asked him: “Why have you not dropped my mail onto the floor?”

Mr Patel said he had put the mail through the letterbox and closed the flap, and had therefore fulfilled his duty.

In the ensuing argument, Mr Patel alleged that Barlow became abusive, swore at him, squared up to him with clenched fists and racially abused him.

Mr Patel also said Barlow tried to grab his ID tag and take a photo of him on his mobile phone before giving him the finger as he left the building.

Barlow maintained that although there was an argument and swearing on both sides, he did not use any racial abuse or threatening language.

He said he had merely asked Mr Patel for a phone number so he could make a complaint.

Barlow had earlier placed a sign on his door asking postmen to put mail all the way through the letterbox because some mail had been stolen after it was left sticking out of his door.

Magistrates dismissed Mr Patel’s claims. Barlow was found not guilty of racially aggravated common assault, racially aggravated harassment, common assault and behaviour causing fear of unlawful violence.
