A CALL is being made for Middlesbrough Council to oppose any plans to close the Teesside Mail Centre in the borough.
A motion is being put forward by Councillor Ken Walker to the full council meeting on May 14, which says that hundreds of local jobs would be in jeopardy if closure plans are considered.
The Royal Mail centre is in Cannon Park - an area the council is seeking to redevelop as an extension to the town centre.
Cllr Walker is concerned that if the mail centre is acquired for the redevelopment of Cannon Park, a new one might not be built on Teesside. Instead, he fears, its work will go to Newcastle.
But a spokeswoman for Royal Mail said: “We have no plans at this time to relocate from the site.â€
